Uma works as a Junior Science Writer/Editor. Her lifelong passion for space led her to pursue a degree in Physics and Astrophysics at Lancaster University. Her infinite curiosity and complex questions prompted her academic journey, where she explored metal-poor stars and contributed to the Lancaster Particle Physics Package project.
Post-graduation, she relocated to Kiruna, Sweden, for a Master’s in Space Science and Technology. In RAVEN, she simulated rocket fins and led a team of 30 students. Then she founded Team ALMA, exploring aerosol composition and volcanic activity correlation, earning recognition in the REXUS/BEXUS programme from ESA.
Uma interned with the ExoMars mission, challenging assumptions about Mars’ atmosphere. She completed her master’s in Astrophysics and Planetology in Toulouse, France, analysing spectra focal effects for the SuperCam Team onboard NASA’s Perseverance rover.
Her global journey continued with the Space Studies Program in Brazil. Then she worked on the Gaia mission at the European Space Agency, unravelling the mysteries of the Universe. Uma is also delegate at the Space Generation Advisory Council and the co-leader of the Mentoring Program with Women In Aerospace (WIA-Europe), shaping a more equitable tomorrow, breaking barriers, and inspiring the next generation of space enthusiasts.
